Computers surpassed humans at chess nearly 30 years ago. Yet human chess is more popular than ever, and people still dedicate their life to improving at chess.
As a more silly comparison, forklifts didn't stop people from weightlifting.
Chess is inherently a leisure activity. The incentive for playing chess is just to be better at chess. But things like woodworking, typesetting, and welding, while all possible to do recreationally, are not leisure activities. They are effort used to produce something. The desire is always there to engage with the thing or idea, but if the resource cost is far too high or the knowledge required is more than one person can reasonably learn the effort will not be expended. A leisure activity will always persist so long as someone knows how to do it because it exists for itself. But many other activities exist in service to something else, and if that something else ceases to exist then the activity will as well. You lose entire domains of useful cross-disciplinary knowledge that way.
Maybe I just need more patience, but I took a look at some tools that have MCPs, and their "setup guide" on how to start using the MCP server really gave me brain damage. Is this really easier to work with?
What do you mean by this? It certainly sounds technical but it seems to not mean anything.
MCP has not smoothed over legacy cruft, and it is generally bad at exactly what you’re describing (many unintentionally coupled APIs with unintentional side effects). These require near deterministic trajectories and you’d be better off creating a consumer with a series of well known good patterns with useful results.
If you take it a step further you may allow for a common language and keyspace of these well known results and employ dynamic solvers that are entirely agnostic. LLMs have made creating these much easier!
Of course MCP can still be implemented poorly by just making a 1:1 clone of the existing API.
But there are also folks who put thought into omitting extraneous fields, combining multiple low-level calls into a single tool that covers a common end-to-end use case, and writing much better documentation. With the political air cover that it is in service of the AI boom. Essentially it gave everyone the opportunity to implement API vN+1.

The overlap comes from the cancer-curing-capable people also drowning in AI slop and people using AI to flood the space with ideas on how to solve cancer and funders wanting to see people using AI because they think it will solve cancer, etc.
