I don't mean to doubt the simulation hypothesis/theories out there grounded in fact. As you point out, it isn't what it sounds like, essentially. But the majority just hears what it sounds like, and form an opinion around it. Ask them to explain, and it's more along the lines of "life's a video game"
There's more to athletic wear than shoes. Competition like Lululemon, Vuori, Athleta, etc. suggest to me that Nike didn't expand their business broadly enough.
If someone intends to engineer an AI which causes mass murder or substantially disrupts critical infrastructure they can get a 20 year sentence. Same as trying to build a nuclear weapon.
