I'm general, familiarity leads to apathy. When we get used to "bad" feelings, it's easy to keep choosing situations that produce those instead of good feelings.
This is how we get people who "prefer" to be sick, tired, angry, hungry, dirty, afraid, etc. -- all things humans generally don't want.
We can train ourselves to "want" to be sick or angry if we're not careful to steer things the other way. It's much easier to control people who are sick and angry (and sell them things), so most messaging in society amplifies these negative emotions.
Calling this a "tool" is a bit of a stretch. A calculator can be used to divide up a bill, and it doesn't require a login, either.
Apps like this are inventing problems in order to offer a solution. Folks can already split a bill, or they can stop being petty and quit worrying about every dollar between friends and family.
Mitigating and monetizing every human activity through an app is anti-human and unhelpful.
I've found this to be the case also. It's so heavily gated that there's almost no point in bringing up a new project or tool because it will be batted down if I'm the one that wrote it.
HN doesn't have that auto-gatekeeping but has taught me to really soft pedal posts about my own stuff. When I've managed to present it as a useful thing and not just my thing, I've gotten significant and sustained lift here.
Amazon uses a warehouse storage "planning" method looks a lot like this. Items are placed on shelves based on proximity and empty space, not on what the items are.
This "disorganized" warehouse is faster for the robots to access as they simply memorize where each item was placed on arrival.
I was in the market for one of these for my new RV, but I went with Eufy, an Anker brand, because you run the server locally on an integrated box. They don't need a cloud service or subscription, so there's no need to trust them with your camera feed.
I did read that link. It's very old. The server box (local) does offer the option to create a web stream, but you have to turn it on. It's no longer the default and even turns itself off after a timeout, so perhaps they responded to that story.
You always could. It's just slower and less efficient because most of what a model query needs to do is matrix multiplication and the GPU is optimized for that.
