yes but also people-churn/attrition was likely lower too. it can really hurt your career to stay in most organizations more than 2 years because very few places devote any meaningful resources to growing from within. if you want better opportunities and more comp it often requires moving companies.

Mostly, yes! They use a very specific clay from a producer which went out of business a few years ago. They've bought up all the stock they can and use that clay for pretty much all of the character puppets, along with other materials. There was a great documentary on the BBC a couple of years back which went behind the scenes and talked about how they make and use the puppets.

What I like about this is that it feels like the new three rules are about focusing on the most successful human alignment technique of making the right thing the easiest. People will usually just do the easiest version of a thing they don't want to do so they can get back to doing what they want to do.
I don't know if that drive is universal or not tho. I have met people that experience pleasure from pain, but then again, is that actually pain?
At some point these phones are powerful enough that we need to be able go get a desktop experience that can run macOS. Why is a 600 dollar neo more capable for productivity than a 2000 dollar iphone with a much beefier chip?
In the first place, the laptop had a 38 year head start in terms of form-factor refinement. The laptop was also born as a productivity device. The design language around dual screen folding phones is still being developed.
It's a software problem. The OS has to switch seamlessly between the iPhone experience and a macOS experience where a full desktop/terminal/install anything is available. Merging the two is not an easy task considering how different the use cases are for both the OSes. Samsung DEX is also not great, it allows some basic stuff but is not going to replace your Macbook.
I think though that we are very close, perhaps < 5 years. Would be amazing to connect this thing to a Studio Display, keyboard and mouse and just act like it's a Mac Mini.
If another company could release something like the Duo that seamlessly switches between phone, tablet, and desktop experience and make it Apple quality then Apple are in trouble. The technology is all there since the days of Ubuntu Touch.
Sadly I don't think there is a company in a position to build such a device that could compete.
This is what I want. If the Duo did something like convert into an iPadOS-like environment I’d buy it day one and sell my non-fold iPhone and iPad.
But I don’t want macOS on an iPhone/iPad. If I wanted a device with poorer hardware security that ran an OS with a fundamentally weaker security model I’d just buy a MacBook and be done with it.
Even if most people never use it, they already have everything they need. And they could market it as a big feature.
Basically no one knows Samsung Dex exists. They could be the ones to bring it to the attention of the mainstream.
I like the idea that if I was stuck in a car dealership or something for service, I could just plug into a laptop docking station with USB-C and use my phone on a bigger screen. Realistically, I’d probably never do it.
But they also might be afraid it would cannibalize Macs, especially now that they have the Neo. And it would certainly just be one more thing to test and keep working.
IDK how a 2000 dollar phone would cannibalize macbooks more than a 700 dollar entry level macbook.
It's possible that the audience for anyone that would plug in their phone to a KVM setup is just too niche to care. Just seems like with computing being so expensive these days, I really want to get the most out of my devices.
Running android in a DeX mode is fine, but its still android. Now that MacOS is already optimized to run on mobile chips, it seems so limiting that it can't run on iPhones just because of customer segmentation.
iOS/iPadOS has way more optimizations under the hood than macOS does in order to keep heat/battery life/performance not poor, the most obvious feature being the way apps and tabs get killed or refreshed in the background.
I don’t think Apple should or even would allow any sort of bare metal macOS mode on their mobile devices, but at least for iPads with M chips I could see them offering macOS via VMs. We know hardware acceleration works, there’s a working virtualization app that runs macOS at native speeds on jailbroken iPads.
I get why they do it, but it sucks that at least at minimum we don’t have a mode that turns it into basically iPadOS when connected to an external monitor, even if the performance and heat problems would be worse. But making that feature available and exclusive to the Duo would have made it more appealing.
I mean, we still have the ridiculous separation between the Macbook Pro and iPad Pro with the same processors where you have to choose between a fully featured OS or a touchscreen. We are a long way from an iPhone being used in that way.
Great content! Inspires me to do the same thing since I am constantly dealing with things falling apart like this. I recently did one manually after putting it of for too long. Get Delta (airline) to go from "here is a 200 dollar bag to replace your 400 dollar bag we damaged" -> "Here is a 450 dollar eCredit".
I would try focusing on building a more unique style of writing, this feels like it went through heavy alignment to Claudes distribution. For the general audience maybe they aren't that sensitive to it yet, but for those that have to use LLMs at work, having to read more of it is grating.
Appreciate the feedback on my writing. I never let Claude add its own opinions or interpretations to what I write, but I do use it for improving the clarity of what I want to say. Problem is that I enjoy the way Claude (Opus 4.6, Fable) writes and I'm unintentionally starting to adopt its style so the line is starting to blur.
I get it, it's easy to ask it to just touch up the language and split run ons. At this point in time, I'm of the opinion that "improving the clarity" at the cost of creating "a discernible style" is not a good trade off.
In most formal publications of The Before Times like newspapers and magazines, you did not want much of a writer's specific tone to come thru bc the organization had its own writing style. We used to value "correctness" because too much variance (without intent) made things hard to read—it was like context switching and came with a cost.
Nowadays though, so many people are already reading Claude writing day in and day out. I would venture to say that the opposite cost is being incurred now, where as soon as I start to see the same language patterns, some attention mechanism in my brain just starts to drift off. I literally cannot mentally focus on reading when the prose is 1:1 the same distribution as Claude. Some kind of fatigue happened by reading its output over and over day after day at work.
Anyway, just think about changing it up if you're interested in writing (even if it means your output is "sloppier").

I have an M1 14" macbook with a broken screen. Would have cost $600+ to get it replaced so i just bought another refurbished one for $750. If i want to use the keyboard its kind of annoying to have to deal with the useless screen, so I would be open to just taking the dang thing off.
