I don't even think it is limited to disinformation posts. I have a FB friend who is a hardcore progressive democrat, very politically forthright, and he is seeing the same type of ads and he is not a firearms owner or survivalist.
Quite surprised to see something firehouse related show up on HN. To add some context, the fire service is both extremely proud of and notorious for it's adherence to 'tradition'. some of that means wonderful things, and some of it means being slow to adopt newer safer practices.
Around the time I was first starting out, I remember somebody saying "The fire service is 225 years of tradition, unimpeded by progress."
OK, that's a little bit of hyperbole, but one can see echoes of an underlying truth there. Just to illustrate one thing that I see a lot: watch Youtube videos of fire departments operating on calls today.. and I mean recent videos from this year, and including ones from FDNY, LAFD, and the other "world class" fire departments out there... and you'll see time and time again, firefighters doing active supression work, wearing their SCBA on their backs like ornaments, but not clipped in and breathing air. Everytime I see this I just want to scream "do you think just having that tank on your back is going to protect you from all the toxic shit you're breathing right now!!??!??"
I mean, how long have we known that firefighters experience cancer at a highly disproportionate rate? How long have we known about the connections between cancer and the various toxic by-products of combustion? And yet...
I would point you to all that cash sitting offshore that they can't repatriate back to the US, and can't seem to find productive use for in the countries where it sits. That is the direct result of tax planning. I haven't been keeping up with the cases, but I know Amazon won, and Coca-cola just lost, not sure where Apple's cases are in tax court. Hopefully they aren't an EY audit/tax client.
Honestly, I think it is because of the high level of the payments it could no longer be ignored, and the sheriff pissed off someone more powerful than them. Usually this stuff would entail a couple of thousand per individual, the whole process was based on insider networking/understanding, no explicit quid pro quo, and the money was slated to an organization that was set up to receive funds for other legitimate purposes so there is some level of transparency. Based on the article, Santa Clara had taken this to a whole new level with what was being demanded and the demands were explicit.
What? Bay Area banks and retail stores routinely have conspicuous security guards open carrying. Not to mention police, which also exist and are commonly seen in the Bay Area.
Don't worry. The government will be coming to restrict and backdoor your general purpose computer as well. Any device that could be hijacked by a botnet is a threat the utilities systems and to people's right to life.
