I don't mean to doubt the simulation hypothesis/theories out there grounded in fact. As you point out, it isn't what it sounds like, essentially. But the majority just hears what it sounds like, and form an opinion around it. Ask them to explain, and it's more along the lines of "life's a video game"
I think the question answers itself given my position (Which is not the popular position). Scientific materialism is the default position nowadays, and that worldview naturally gives rise to a disposable & profane way of life (Everything OP is complaining about).

I always had the thought in the back of my mind "what better way to flag content as potentially incriminating then to let the user tell you "this conversation is not to be retained."
Especially the way the "advertise" incognito as some sort of untraceable means of searching/chattig etc, we ought to see these sorts of things from a less trusting-by-default perspective.
